The genius street artist that gets his kicks by thoughtfully parodying the minutia in our daily lives through oft appearing street art popping up around the world may have just cemented his legacy forever. Many news outlets are claiming this stunt as a prank, however we'd like to think of it as a real-time art showcase of Banksy's truest feelings.
Banksy did the unthinkable when he made his 2006 piece “Girl With Balloon,” self-destruct immediately after fetching a closing offer for $1.4 million at Sotheby's in London.
“Then we heard an alarm go off,” Morgan Long, the head of art investment at the London-based advisory firm the Fine Art Group, who was sitting in the front row of the room, said in an interview on Saturday. “Everyone turned round, and the picture had slipped through its frame.”
What sounds like the greatest viral moment in art auction history may not have been caught on tape (at least not at the time of this article), however we'll send it over to Twitter for the stunned reaction at Sotheby's in London.

Shortly after the hammer went down, “Girl With Balloon” was shredded by a mechanism apparently hidden within the base of the frame. pic.twitter.com/eb639C0uyK
Hopefully we get to see the actual shredding in a soon-to-come update, but we must warn anyone that watches, $1.4 million dollars being destroyed in real-time is not for the faint of heart.
